SCADAwall physically separates, secures and isolates sensitive equipment in the trusted plant zone from risk of internet exposure or malicious activity via data diode functionality – essentially providing an airgap bridge. This allows plants to safely transfer files, replicate servers, integrate plant data into IT tools such as SIEMS, and feed business data analytics to outside business destinations without risk of compromising sensitive equipment or plant operations.
Data diodes, also frequently called “unidirectional” gateways, are one of the strongest security controls available to companies who want to transfer data from trusted to untrusted domains because they use hardware to enforce one-way communications, isolating the trusted network from any form of inbound connections. For years they have been used to protect and isolate government organizations who need to exchange data but have differing security clearance levels, and also for large, regulated industries such as nuclear power plants and others.

However, data diodes are not without their challenges. These include high cost for the technology, relatively low bandwidth compared to typical networking technologies, and further loss of available bandwidth due to retransmission overhead which can consume up to 30-40% of that bandwidth since there is no guaranteed delivery possible on those legacy devices. Industrial organizations have notoriously small budgets, and tools which create a choke point on network throughput or are otherwise prohibitively expensive and complex simply cannot be used in most of those environments. Many have had to abandon data diodes because they are not able to justify the cost/performance benefit.
